Which Indian cities are most AI-exposed?
A city is not exposed. Its job mix is. Cities score high here when their employment is concentrated in screen-based work with clear inputs and outputs, priced per task. Every number below is an estimate from our task-exposure model with a stated confidence level — not a measured unemployment figure.
Cities
Highest concentration of digital, screen-based delivery work in the country, and the fastest AI tooling adoption.
Volume voice and process work is the single most exposed employment cluster in India.
Large captive delivery centres where output is measured per ticket and per document.
Services, consulting and marketing production work — all document and deck heavy.
Mixed engineering and IT base — manufacturing exposure keeps the index below Bengaluru.
Finance and media production tasks are heavily exposed; relationship-led finance roles are not.
Auto and manufacturing employment dilutes the software exposure.
Public sector and trade employment slows role redesign.
Growing IT base against a large healthcare and hospitality workforce.
Tier-2 GCC hiring is growing 23% year on year, faster than the metros, but it grew on cost-arbitrage process work — the same work AI prices down.
Trade and manufacturing dominate; accounting is the exposed pocket.
Physical and local-trust work dominates; the exposure arrives through market demand, not tooling.
Industries
Document understanding removed the keying step.
Tier-1 resolution is now largely machine-handled at scale.
Per-task pricing is exactly what AI competes on.
Production collapsed in price; reporting and editing held value.
Creative volume is free; budget accountability is not.
Ticket-scoped delivery work compresses; client-facing scope survives.
Screening and scheduling automate; closing candidates does not.
Compliance production automates; sign-off and advisory do not.
Trackers and MIS automate; on-ground escalation does not.
Processing seats shrink, relationship and collections seats hold.
Entry-level work is the sharpest edge of the disruption.
Execution automates; direction is a moat.
Reporting and modelling automate; defending the numbers does not.
Deliverables get cheaper; demand generation stays yours.
Research and decks automate; client trust remains the product.
Roles get redesigned first here, but headcount value per person rises.
Junior document work compresses hardest.
Outreach automates; closing and relationships do not.
Slow institutional adoption, gradual clerical redesign.
Drawings and documentation automate; site work does not.
Prep automates; classroom presence does not.
Back-office exposed, floor and category work protected.
Documentation relief rather than replacement.
Salary brackets
Priced as execution capacity — the cheapest work to hand to tooling.
Standard fresher and process band; the most disrupted salary segment in India.
Mid-level delivery. Exposure depends entirely on whether you own a decision.
Scope starts including judgment, review and stakeholders.
Accountability-weighted roles; risk shifts from replacement to expectation.
Paid for outcomes and relationships, which do not transfer to a model.

Real hiring demand feeding the model
These are published year-on-year changes in Indian job openings — not HumanTail estimates. The exposure model uses them as a demand counterweight: shrinking openings raise a role's exposure, live demand lowers it. All white-collar hiring in India moved +12% year on year in February 2026.

Fresher hiring
Fresher hiring across India rose +18% year on year (December 2025) — led by Hospitality +56%, Insurance +56%, BPO / ITES +44%, Real Estate +43%. The growth is outside IT, which is why an IT fresher and a hospitality fresher do not get the same score. Source.

How the numbers are built
- We score tasks, not job titles. Each role is decomposed into the duties people actually perform in India, and each duty carries an exposure weight for how well current AI systems do it end to end.
- Role exposure is the weighted duty score, adjusted for the Indian delivery context: how the work is priced (per task, per ticket, per document), how much of it is screen-based, and how much requires physical presence or accountable sign-off.
- City, industry and salary indices are the weighted exposure of the local job mix — not measured job losses. Salary is used as a proxy for scope: the further a role sits from owning a decision, the higher its exposure.
- Every score carries a confidence label (HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW) based on how much verified duty-level data supports it. Low-confidence numbers are labelled, not hidden.
- Figures are estimates published for public scrutiny. They are recalibrated every month against reported hiring, headcount and capability data.

Your city is not your score
A product engineer in Bengaluru and a manual tester in Bengaluru live in completely different risk. The map is context; your duties are the answer.
